Courseplay : Arjun Gupta
Q1.How would you describe ‘Courseplay’ in under 50 words?
Courseplay is an easy-to-use cloud-based learning platform that works on any device and provides detailed analytics and reports. Clients can quickly set up courses to train, test and track their employees, students, customers or vendors with Courseplay. Courseplay works seamlessly for self-paced learning, virtual classrooms or blended learning options.
Q2.Who is the team behind your venture?
Courseplay was created by Arjun Gupta, who is the Founder and CEO of Firstventure Corporation.
Q3.What is your work style?
Focused, top-down approach for big picture decisions, bottom-up for everything else
Q4.How did you come across this idea? What was missing from the current solutions that you are seeking to fix?
After returning home from university in Boston, Arjun saw a huge potential in the Indian workforce, but a critical shortage of affordable and scalable training programs. That's how Courseplay was born. The current solutions require a lot of guesswork and research to design the most effective programs. This reduces scalability. Our vision is to create an intelligent platform that can understand the learning requirements on day one and constantly guide learners on what they must do automagically.
Q5.What would you say is the biggest lesson you have learned while running ‘Courseplay’?
I worried about 'whose going to let me...' rather than 'whose going to stop me...'. I had focused too much on specific individuals, and getting feedback or meetings from them. Not only is too much effort involved in targeting specific individuals, but if their feedback wasn't positive enough, I would take it personally and it would devastate me. Instead I would focus on quantity rather than quality at such an early stage. Email everyone you know asking for 5 minutes of their time over the phone and then call them and pitch the product. If many people say the same thing, then listen to them. Don't worry about the outliers.
Q6.How do you create your learning material?
We don't create our own learning content. We have a fantastic network of content partners that provide us with custom or off-the-shelf learning content. Most of our clients also create their own content and sometimes we help them with that.
Q7.What is your primary focus in terms of new developments at the moment?
We're putting a lot of attention on our native Android and iOS mobile apps right now. We're looking to do some interesting things with microlearning soon.
Q8.What are the future plans for growth?
We're investing in making our platform more and more intelligent and our growth is going to be very product oriented.
Q9.Who is your target consumer and what is the need that you’re servicing?
a.We're best suited to cater to companies that are looking to deliver learning content to more than 500 people. The location, sector and type of learner don't matter, however our current focus is on Indian companies in the Healthcare, Civil Aviation, IT, BPO, Edtech, Retail and Financial sectors.
b.The main problem that we're solving is to make learning more scalable and to automate most of the tedious paperwork and administration. By doing this, we have transformed the role that training teams perform at each of our clients. Now the training department focuses on creating and purchasing new and engaging content rather than teaching the same courses again and again every day.
Q10.How has the growth been since launch and what are the future plans?
We have seen a very positive response from the Indian market. We hope to expand internationally in the coming months, with a heavy focus on the Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets.
Q11.What is your one tip for aspiring entrepreneurs?
When you make it big some day, don’t forget about everyone that helped you get there.
